Why can't I hire a systems vendor as a consultant? They really know their systems?

Some clients are tempted to bypass ‘the expense’ of a consultant and ask a vendor to propose a solution to their problem. The problem with this is that a technology vendor has the operational goal of selling technology, and specifically, the technology from their product portfolio. Management consultants start by identifying the business problem which sometimes requires a technology solution, sometime a change in business process and often, a combination of both.
