The Old Consultant Question
Isn't it true that if you ask a consultant for the time, they'd borrow your watch?
IT people sometimes ask “Why do we need a consultant? They don’t know our environment, so we have to teach them how we do things before they can add value.” While that’s all true, management consultants deliver value in a number of ways:
- Sometimes you’re just too close to a problem. An external consultant looks at the problem with fresh eyes, with none of the assumptions that are ingrained into long-term staff.
- They've seen similar problems in a number of organizations and can draw useful parallels.
- They have often developed proprietary approaches as they don't spend their time bogged down with 'keeping the lights on'.
- They can validate to management what you have known for years.
